Overview

We've all felt it—those late-night surges of motivation – setting 5 AM alarms, planning routines, visualizing goals. Yet by the next afternoon, we’re back to old habits, guilt-tripping ourselves over skipped workouts and unfinished plans.

Why do people struggle so much with habit-building, even when they want to change?
As a UX designer fascinated by human behavior, I set out to deeply understand this cycle – what drives motivation, where it fails, and how to support people in building lasting habits. This journey led to Buzzle – a playful, psychology-driven habit-building app that turns consistency into a social, rewarding game.

Problem Space

Despite endless self-help content and productivity apps, 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. I identified three recurring friction points:

  • Lack of accountability: Most apps rely on self-discipline, ignoring the power of social pressure.

  • Unclear rewards: Long-term goals often feel too abstract.

  • Rigid systems: Habits often break due to life’s unpredictability, and most tools don’t adapt.

Research

I spoke to over 100 people through surveys and 1:1 interviews to ask:
Why is it so hard to stick to good habits?

I heard:

  • “I start strong but lose momentum.”

  • “I feel alone in my journey.”

  • “I wish someone would just remind me… or care if I skipped.”

Despite hundreds of habit trackers on the market, most were cold, lonely, and easy to ignore. People didn’t need another checklist — they needed support, connection, and a little fun.

Key insights :

  • Habit failure is more emotional than logical. People blame themselves and give up quickly after missing a few days.

  • Peer visibility increases accountability. Knowing others are watching boosts follow-through.

  • Small, immediate wins work better than future promises. People are more motivated by streaks, scores, and friendly competition than distant outcomes.

Core Insight

People don’t just need discipline; they need belonging, flexibility, and reward.
That became the foundation of Buzzle.
